Inter could potentially face Milan or Juventus in the Champions League round of 16, but the Rossoneri and Bianconeri still have work to do in the competition’s play-off round before that becomes a genuine possibility.
Here’s what needs to happen for an all-Italian match-up in the Champions League round of 16.
The second legs of the Champions League play-off rounds get underway this week. Milan are in action first in the early kick-off slot on Tuesday, needing to overturn a 1-0 deficit against Eredivisie outfit Feyenoord. Atalanta will look to bounce back from a 2-1 loss against Club Brugge on Tuesday as well.
Juventus were the only Serie A side to win in the first leg of the play-off round, and will carry a 2-1 advantage into their return leg against PSV at the Allianz Stadium on Wednesday night.

In order for Inter to face a Serie A rival in the Champions League round of 16, Milan and Juventus will, of course, need to get through their play-off games.
If both Milan and Juventus qualify, then there is a 50% chance of an all-Italian match-up in the round of 16. The Nerazzurri could also face either Feyenoord or PSG in the next round.
There will be a draw on Friday to determine the round of 16 fixtures, following the completion of the play-off games scheduled for this week, which means it will effectively come down to chance.

Inter have picked up just one point against Milan and one point against Juventus from their meetings this season.
Milan won the first Derby della Madonnina of the season 2-1 under Paulo Fonseca back in September and also claimed a 1-1 draw in the reverse leg in December. Milan also beat Inter 3-2 in the final of the Supercoppa Italiana in January. Inter did beat Milan 1-0 and 2-0 in two legs of the 2022-23 Champions League semi-finals, teeing up a date with eventual winners Manchester City.
Juventus have a similar record against the Nerazzurri this season. There was a spectacular 4-4 draw between the two sides in October, but the Old Lady claimed three points with a 1-0 win at the Allianz Stadium on Sunday.
