A loophole in Chelsea's loan agreement over Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho means the Englishman could still return to Old Trafford at the end of the season, a report has claimed.

Sancho joined Chelsea last summer on a deal which included an obligation for Chelsea to make the move permanent for anywhere between £20m and £25m, with the final fee set to be decided by their final league position.

The obligation is only valid if Chelsea finish above 14th in the Premier League standings which, while not yet guaranteed, feels like a certainty at this point in the campaign.

However, the Daily Mail state there are still ways Chelsea's move for Sancho could collapse.

First and foremost, it is claimed Chelsea can simply refuse to sign Sancho permanently if they pay what is described as a "significant penalty", the amount of which is not mentioned.

Even if Chelsea do agree to proceed with a permanent deal for Sancho, they still need to agree personal terms with the winger after surprisingly signing off on a future transfer without finalising a contract with Sancho.

Should talks collapse, Sancho could still return to United, who will have to pay £17m to Borussia Dortmund this summer as part of their deal to sign the winger all the way back in 2021.

Chelsea are known to be keen to sign a new winger this summer regardless of what happens with Sancho, who recently admitted to being "annoyed" by his struggles in front of goal this season - just two goals in 26 appearances.
