RB Leipzig headed into this game with a lot of hope thanks to Xavi Simons’ return from injury and he started for the first time since October for Marco Rose’s side.

In the first two minutes, Xavi Simons instantly showed his impact on his return to the starting eleven by playing a ball through to David Raum which was intercepted.

During the 11th minute, Bremen’s Romano Schmid chested the ball wide in Werder’s first real chance of the game.

Around the 20th minute, Loïs Openda's acrobatic effort went wide.

Minutes later, Xavi Simons scored his first goal since October as the Dutchman slotted the ball into the bottom corner after an Openda flick-on.

Shortly after, Bremen replied just minutes later as defender Mitchell Weiser played a set of one-twos then finished with the left foot to equalise the game one-all.

After the equaliser, Leipzig piled on more pressure and Xavi Simons came with a quick reply for Leipzig to make it 2-1 as his deflected outside of the box effort went in off Gideon Jung in the last notable action of the half.

After half time, Bremen’s Marco Friedl come off for Milo Veljković.

Early on,  RB Leipzig doubled the deficit thanks to a wonderful strike from Benjamin Šeško which beat Bremen’s Zetter from 25 yards out into the top right corner.

During the 54th minute, VAR decided against a penalty for Werder Bremen as the ball hit David Raum's hand.

In the 72nd minute, Werder Bremen player Marvin Ducksch's effort was deflected out for a corner.

Ten minutes later, Antonio Nusa's wonder goal after dribbling past several Werder Bremen players was denied by the post.

In the 90th minute, Christoph Baumgartner killed off the game after curling the ball into the bottom corner to make it 4-1.

As the last action of the game, Oliver Burke got a consolation against his former club after he capitalised on a defensive error and lifted the ball over Leipzig keeper Gulacsi to make it 4-2.
