Brentford survived a major late scare as they held on to earn a thrilling 4-3 win over Manchester United.

The Bees were cruising to a comfortable victory to keep them in the hunt for European football next season when they moved 4-1 up with 15 minutes to go, but Alejandro Garnacho pulled one back with a stunner and Amad Diallo then struck in stoppage-time to set up a grandstand finish.

Ruben Amorim made eight changes, with his focus clearly on United’s Europa League campaign, but it was the visitors who took the lead, when Mason Mount turned in from Garnacho’s cross for his first goal of the season.

Brentford, though, were the better side and by half-time they were in front themselves. Mikkel Damsgaard’s flick was turned into his own net by Luke Shaw, before Kevin Schade rose highest at the back post to head the hosts into the lead.

That came while Matthijs de Ligt was sat on the floor, signalling he had to come off, in what was a significant blow to the visitors.

With 20 minutes to go, Schade again headed beyond Altay Bayindir to double the advantage, and the match was seemingly then put to bed when Yoanna Wissa provided the finishing touch to a lovely Brentford move.

But Garnacho gave the visitors hope when he produced a sensational curling strike into the top corner, and the board showing seven minutes of stoppage-time increased the nerves around the stadium.

Those grew further when Amad’s shot found a way through Mark Flekken, but there was to be no last-gasp equaliser for United.

Their season rests solely on the Europa League, where they hold a 3-0 aggregate lead over Athletic Bilbao after a stunning first-leg win in Spain in that semi-final tie.
