Yui Hasegawa has been voted the 2024/25 Etihad Player of the Season.
Thanks to your votes, the Japan international came out on top in the three-player shortlist with Mary Fowler and Kerstin Casparij.
To understand the combative and classy defensive midfielder’s vital importance to the Blues, a quick examination of her appearances this term tells almost the full story.
Hasegawa has made the joint-most appearances in all competitions this term with 38 and started each of our 22 Barclays Women’s Super League matches as Nick Cushing’s side closed the campaign with a 5-2 win over Crystal Palace.
In what was her third season at the Joie Stadium since arriving from West Ham in the summer of 2022, the 28-year-old was once again our midfield lynchpin and metronome dictating the play in every third.
Among her City colleagues she won possession across league assignments more times than anyone with a staggering 163 retrieves which also translates across the division with Hasegawa’s tally the highest in the top-flight.
She also ranks highest at the Club for interceptions this term and duels won in the WSL and her defensive importance is further highlighted by her winning the second-most tackles within Cushing’s side.
By the term’s end, Hasegawa also registered four assists in all competitions with perhaps her standout creation coming in a dramatic win over Tottenham in March.
With the game level 1-1 in the closing stages, the midfielder scooped the ball into her fellow Japan international Aoba Fujino who controlled well and slammed into the roof of the net.
By winning the 2024/25 Etihad Player of the Year, Hasegawa becomes the second player to win the award after Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw claimed last term’s prize.
Congratulations to Yui on her remarkable season and achievement and thank you to everyone who voted this season!
