Enzo Fernandez has had a really tough season.
A year ago, even as Chelsea struggled at the start of the season, the midfielder was able to put in some really good performances. But as the team improved, he looked more and more lost, and the knock on Mauricio Pochettino by the end was that he couldn’t get the Argentine’s partnership with Moises Caicedo to work well for the team.
Things got even worse for Enzo. After a controversial summer, he found himself gradually losing his place in Enzo Maresca’s team. With the Italian coach empowered by good results, Romeo Lavia became a fixture at Enzo’s expense.
His chance to strike back came last weekend, with Lavia unfit to start against Leicester. Enzo stepped up, and taking advantage of a Foxes team which gave him far too much space and time to create, walked away with a goal and an assist.
Harry Redknapp had him down as one of his players of the week, and wrote the following about his impact:
“Enzo Fernandez had a great game away at Leicester. He’s been creating so much over the last few weeks, and this was no different, creating the opening goal. He got his first league goal of the season to seal the win, and you just wonder how good this Chelsea side could be if he can keep this form up, he’s a World Cup winner after all,” the former Spurs coach wrote for BetVictor.

We still think Enzo is far from a fixture in this Chelsea team – Lavia can expect to slot back in when he’s fit – but at least the £107m man got a chance to remind everyone what he can do in terms of goals and assists. The next few weeks will hopefully see that form continue.
