Inter Milan have run out of excuses in the Serie A title race after a complacent, entitled-looking performance against Fiorentina.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Inter’s devastating loss to Fiorentina on Thursday evening represented a big missed opportunity.

The Nerazzurri were playing their game in hand against La Viola after more than two months.

Going into the match, Inter were three points behind Napoli, but with the chance to catch up. Coming out of it, they are still three points behind – but with no extra match.

And there was nothing unlucky about Thursday’s defeat at the hands of Fiorentina.

There were no bad refereeing decisions that the Nerazzurri could point to.

Nor was it a question of injuries. On the contrary, Inter Milan had virtually a full squad available whereas Fiorentina were dealing with a full-blown injury crisis.

But the Gazzetta diagnose Inter’s performance as presumptuous, entitled, and complacent.

The Nerazzurri just seemed to be going through the motions, and expecting to overcome inferior opposition on paper.

Fiorentina, on the other hand, played with hunger and real organization. Even players playing out of position knew their role, and the team put their bodies on the line.

This won’t be the last match Inter face in Serie A against opposition with that kind of motivation and intensity.

And any more performances like Thursday’s could be tantamount to throwing away the title for Inter.
