Liverpool manager Arne Slot believes Wolves’ goal was entirely “avoidable” after Ibrahima Konate made an error that led directly to it.

The Reds ultimately ran out 2-1 winners at Molineux on Saturday thanks to Mo Salah’s penalty.

Konate had opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time, but the Frenchman dallied on the ball in the 56th minute, allowing Jorgen Strand Larsen to rob him of possession right before Rayan Ait-Nouri equalised.

Slot gave a detailed explanation for why Liverpool were not at their best in the game, and suggested his side didn’t show enough energy in the opening 45 minutes.

“I don’t think we started well, but we have to give credit to Wolves and Gary O’Neil,” the Dutchman told Sky Sports after the final whistle.

“They had a real good game-plan. We had some problems in the first 20 minutes, but afterwards we took control of the game. They overloaded our right side a lot with many players.

“Normally we try to press with Salah a bit more forward, but sometimes it is not about tactics, it is about how aggressive you press.

“How strong you are in the duels and in the second half we come out better – the energy and intensity was much higher.

“Sometimes we feel we have to be more patient against a low block team, I am not saying Wolves were that.

“We were patient and kept circulating the ball and kept waiting for the right moment to bring the ball in.”

Konate joked afterwards that he deserved the Player of the Match instead of Ryan Gravenberch after scoring his first Premier League. Slot, however, disagreed, pointing to the mistake he made which led directly to Wolves’ goal.

“Konate? Then maybe he forgot the moment we conceded a goal,” he pointed out.

“That was the reason we conceded as he wasn’t there and it was avoidable.”
