Have Man United hit rock bottom?

That may be the pertinent question facing the club following a 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Saturday.

It’s their second consecutive loss and leaves them 13th in the table – their lowest ever position after 15 games of a Premier League campaign.

There is no shame in losing to a side that has beaten Liverpool at Anfield, the league leader’s only defeat of the season, and proudly sit fifth in the standings.

There are even encouraging signs for United. They actually look like an organised unit under Ruben Amorim, a far cry from whatever Erik ten Hag was trying to do, and move the ball forward more quickly.

Yet they seem eternally held back by ludicrous, often comical errors. Last week it was Marcus Rashford needlessly gifting Arsenal a corner from which they scored. This week each one of Forest’s goals was marked by a mistake.

Lisandro Martinez was responsible for two of them. He was bullied and bodied by Nikola Milenkovic for the early opener before bizarrely letting Chris Woods’ header pass him by for what was ultimately the winner.

Andre Onana was somewhat unfortunate for the Tricky Trees’ second. The goalkeeper was wrong footed by a swerving strike from Morgan Gibbs-White, who admitted afterwards that he “didn’t [think it was going in] at all”.

Man United have also swerved any sort of new manager bounce. Amorim has overseen just two wins out of five in all competitions since taking charge, a 4-0 thumping of Everton.

“We had not a lot of quality but a lot of heart,” he opined to Sky Sports after the final whistle.

“After the first goal we had good moments creating chances but we went forward without thinking – we have address it and it’s a long journey. It’s a tough context but we have to understand this is a long journey and that’s what our jobs are.”

Indeed, it’s going to be a long and arduous road to get Man United back to above average, never mind resurrecting the glory days.
