UWCL round-up: 34 goals scored in thrilling week as multiple clubs dominate | OneFootball

The UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) returned after a brief pause this week and it was a round full of goals. Women’s Super League table-toppers Manchester City welcomed recently dethroned Swedish champions Hammarby. Meanwhile at Celtic Park, Celtic met Chelsea in a ‘Battle of Britain’ clash.

Juventus 0-4 Arsenal

Millie Lumb has got all the action from Turin as Arsenal looked to continue their revival under Renée Slegers.

Barcelona 7-0 St Pölten

Bayern Munich 3-0 Vålarenga

Bayern Munich swept Vålerenga aside as they maintained their 100 percent record in Group C. It took the German side a little under 10 minutes to take the lead. Klara Bühl floated a wonderful cross in and Pernille Harder was on hand to head home. Cue the Can-Can.

Giulia Gwinn notched her first club goal of the season from the penalty spot in the 17th minute. At 2-0 to Bayern, it was looking like game over already. The hosts continued to apply pressure as they searched for a third. To their credit, Vålerenga held firm although Harder somehow didn’t score from a yard out with an hour gone. Sarah Zadrazil rubber-stamped victory for the home side in added on time. A stunning volley from the edge of the box left Tove Enblom with no chance.

Manchester City 2-0 Hammarby

Galatasray 0-5 VfL Wolfsburg

Rebecka Blomqvist bagged a hat-trick as Wolfsburg gained a priceless win in Istanbul to kickstart their campaign. Having lost their opening two matches, nothing less than three points was the order of the day for Die Wölfinnen.

The German side thought they’d taken an eighth minute lead, but Blomqvist’s goal was ruled out. Joelle Wedemeyer did put Wolfsburg ahead with 24 minutes gone as she powered home a header from Svenja Huth’s corner.

Blomqvist’s first of the night came in the 63rd minute. She was first to react to tap home after Janina Minge had rattled the crossbar from all of 35 yards. The Swedish international curled home her second of the night fourteen minutes later. She sealed the match ball in sensational manner in added time with a rocket from the edge of the box.

There was still time for Vivian Endemann to get in on the act moments later to make it 5-0.

Real Madrid 7-0 FC Twente

Real Madrid demolished Dutch champions FC Twente in Spain on Wednesday. They wasted little time in taking the lead as Signe Bruun tapped home Caroline Weir’s cross after three minutes. María Méndez doubled the Spaniards’ lead just after the quarter-hour mark with a flicked header.

Both sides traded half chances, with Twente’s Amanda Andradóttir and Real’s Weir both firing over. However, the wheels came off for Twente in the second half. Naomie Feller headed home Madrid’s third of the night on 50 minutes.

A stunning free-kick from Weir just five minutes later made it 4-0. A quick-fire double added some gloss to the score. Méndez’s second header of the night and a wonderful run and finish from her defensive counterpart Oihane Hernández made it six. Twente’s misery was complete when Carla Camacho added number seven in stoppage time.

Celtic 1-2 Chelsea

Chelsea maintained their 100 percent start under Sonia Bompastor but were made to work at Celtic Park.

The Scottish champions took a shock lead in the 22nd minute. A deft touch from Shannon McGregor fed the ball into the path of Amy Gallagher. Her first time pass cut through the heart of the Chelsea defence and found Murphy Agnew who timed her run to perfection. She lofted the ball over the advancing Zećira Mušović to send the home support into raptures.

The Blues equalised six minutes later. Aggie Beever-Jones created space for the cross and cut the ball back for Maika Hamano. The Japanese international’s finish wrong footed Celtic keeper Kelsey Daugherty who couldn’t readjust. Hamano didn’t raise so much as smile as she grabbed the ball and headed back for the centre circle.

The turnaround was complete just four minutes later through Ashley Lawrence. It took three attempts as Erin Cuthbert drew a fine save from Daugherty. The first rebound fell to Lawrence, whose shot was blocked, but she made no mistake second time around and slammed the ball into the roof of the net.

Catarina Macario drew a fine save from Daughtery who acrobatically tipped the ball over with 20 minutes to play as they looked to put the game to bed. The only blot on the Chelsea copybook was a late sending off for Beever-Jones for a second booking.

Roma 0-3 Lyon

Lyon stayed perfect at the top of Group A with a routine victory in Rome. Melchie Dumornay struck with 10 minutes of the first half remaining, firing through a crowd of bodies to put Lyon a goal up.

Dumornay doubled her and Lyon’s tally just before the break with a finish of highest order. Roma made a mess of a free-kick on the halfway line and Dumornay lofted the ball over the stranded Camelia Cesar from 40 yards out. Vanessa Gilles added the third early in the second half as she reacted quickest to a loose ball from a corner.

Next week sees the UWCL fixtures reversed as the group stage starts to hot up.
