Bayern Munich were 4-0 up and coasting against newly-promoted Holstein Kiel on Saturday afternoon, but three goals in 30 minutes – two of which came in stoppage time – made for a nervy ending for Vincent Kompany’s side.
Speaking post-match, Joshua Kimmich didn’t shy about questioning the players’ mentality: “We’re currently lacking the hunger for 90 minutes.
“It’s not a question of quality. It’s more in the minds. We must not lose our principles. If we lose them, we’re a normal team. That makes us vulnerable against any team.”
Jamal Musiala opened the scoring before goals from Harry Kane either side of the break gave Bayern a comfortable 3-0 lead. Serge Gnabry then scored just his fourth Bundesliga goal of the season after 54 minutes before Finn Porath put Kiel on the scoresheet at the Allianz Arena just after the hour mark. Steven Skrzybski then scored a brace in added time, but it wasn’t enough – although not many teams can go to the Allianz Arena and score three.
Which again brings into question Bayern’s ruthlessness. The fact that they allowed Kiel to score three against them should serve as a warning sign as against better teams, that damage could be a lot worse.
