FLW takes a look at how the average attendance at Elland Road this season compares to the rest of the stadiums in the Championship.
Leeds United may be top of the table in the Championship right now but there is one club that is above them when it comes to the average home attendances in the second tier this season.
The Whites have impressed under Daniel Farke during the 2024/25 campaign so far, currently sitting in pole position to go on and win automatic promotion to the Premier League and put the memories of their play-off final defeat last season behind them.
As usual, Elland Road has been bouncing for the majority of the season, which has contributed to Leeds having the best home record in the Championship, with 13 wins, two draws, and just one defeat.
Therefore, with fellow promotion-chasers Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion being the next two sides set to visit West Yorkshire in the league, there will be confidence amongst the supporters that the team can extend their unbeaten record in front of their own fans, and in turn extend their lead at the top of the Championship.
While everyone knows that Elland Road is one of the most difficult stadiums to get a result from in the second tier, there is another club in the division that boasts a higher average attendance at this stage of the season.
The only club that has a higher average attendance in the Championship during the 2024/25 season so far is Sunderland.
Admittedly, it would be impossible for Leeds to have bettered their figure, as the Black Cats have an average attendance of 38,546, while the capacity of Elland Road is only 37,645.
According to Transfermarkt, Sunderland's average attendance of 38,546 is the highest in the Championship, with Leeds' average attendance of 36,181 coming in second and Derby County's average attendance of 29,083 making up the top three.
There is no doubt that Leeds supporters fill a higher percentage of seats at Elland Road than Sunderland fans do at the Stadium of Light, as the capacity of the latter is 48,707.
Still, the impressive turnout from both sets of fans this season may well have had an impact on the pitch, as Leeds and Sunderland currently find themselves sitting first and second respectively in the home form table in the Championship.
Leeds will no doubt have a higher average attendance in the future, and they will hope that it affects the average attendance figures in the Premier League rather than the Championship.
The club has plans to enhance Elland Road, in a move which will take the capacity from 37,645 to c.53,000, making the stadium the seventh largest in the country and enabling thousands more Leeds fans to support their team on a matchday.
Enhancing Elland Road will bring the ground in line with UEFA Category 4 status, putting it alongside elite stadiums in Europe, while there is also an objective to ensure the unique atmosphere that is associated with the current stadium can be maintained.
Given the size of Leeds' fanbase, and the fact that they could well be a top-flight club by the time the enhanced stadium is complete, there is no doubt that they will be able to boast a higher average attendance figure than the one they have managed this season in years to come.
