The period of 2016 to 2018 was a special time for Huddersfield Town, as the club managed to achieve things that would last forever.

The Terriers had been a side that spent a lot of time in League One before they eventually moved up into the second tier.

But their jump to the Championship meant they became a club that was expected to always finish around the bottom end of the table.

But in the 2016/17 season, Huddersfield managed to define all the odds and not only competed for a play-off spot but also won promotion to the promised land, the Premier League.

It was a magical time for the club, so therefore, there will be plenty of players particularly remembered by the fans, and forward Elias Kachunga will fit into that category, as he joined the club for a hefty £1.1 million that season, albeit he was initially on loan.

The 2016/17 campaign was manager David Wagner’s first full season in charge of the club, so the German was keen to put his own stamp on the squad.

Huddersfield Town brought in a lot of unknown players in the 2016 summer transfer window, with forward Elias Kachunga being one of them.

The Yorkshire side brought in the DR Congo international on a season-long loan deal from German side FC Ingolstadt.

Kachunga had spent all of his career in Germany until this point, appearing for the likes of Paderborn, Osnabruck and Borussia Monchengladbach before signing for FC Ingolstadt in 2015 - but he struggled for regular starts.

So, Huddersfield took him on loan, which turned out to be an excellent decision, as Kachunga was scoring goals for fun and was key to what the club went on to do.

In March 2017, the Terriers announced that they had triggered the clause in Kachunga’s contract and signed the forward on a permanent basis for £1.1 million due to the form he had showed that season in the Championship.

Even in 2017, £1.1 million was a lot of money for a team like Huddersfield Town, but looking back, it was a deal that will have delighted the club’s supporters.

As mentioned, the Terriers signed Elias Kachunga on loan initially, and it would have been hard to find anyone who thought his time at the club was going to be as successful as it was.

In that 2016/17 season, Kachunga started 41 of the 42 games he was available for, averaging 86 minutes per game, and his performances even got him in the team of the week twice, as per Sofascore.com.

The DR Congo international was outstanding in that season, as he finished the campaign with 12 goals, averaging one 0.3 times per game, and he had a goal conversion rate of 17%.

Furthermore, Kachunga was always making a nuisance of himself, as he averaged 1.7 shots per game and could have even added to his goal tally, as he missed six big chances.

But as well as scoring goals, the forward was also a player who was keen on creating opportunities for his teammates. Kachunga created one big chance as well as averaging 1.3 key passes, which helped him chip in with two assists, as per Sofascore.com.

His performances in that season made Kachunga someone very popular among the Huddersfield faithful, as he was a key player in a club that was defying all the odds by achieving their Premier League dream.

Kachunga was unable to replicate the form shown in the 2016/17 season in the two Premier League campaigns, but he will still be remembered by the fans as he helped them achieve the success they did, and therefore, he would likely always be welcome back to the football club.

The Terriers never really replaced Kachunga when he departed, and while they may do so in the future, the club will unlikely find a similar player to him who was adored by the fans as much as he was.
