Manchester United could still seal a deal for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte this summer as his agent, Jorge Mendes, is trying to engineer a deal which would see the 23-year-old join the Red Devils, according to The Athletic.

The Old Trafford club are insisting that the French club’s €60 million asking price for the Uruguay international midfielder is too high given that he is surplus to requirements at the Parc des Princes club.

However, Mendes – who was a key figure in their move for Leny Yoro – is keen for Man United to get the deal done, and people connected to the situation claim that a resolution is still possible closer to the August 30 transfer deadline.

The Portuguese was in England earlier this week to hold talks with the Red Devils, and it will be intriguing to see what he comes up with in his bid to convince both PSG and Man United to reach an agreement.

Signing a defensive midfielder remains of high priority to manager Erik ten Hag as he knows he cannot rely solely on the 32-year-old Casemiro for the whole of the new season.

Bringing back Sofyan Amrabat on another loan spell from Fiorentina has not been completely ruled out, but Man United are starting to look elsewhere, with talks being held with Burnley over Norwegian international Sander Berge.

Brazilian midfielder Danilo Oliveira is also on their radar, but Nottingham Forest want around €40m for the 23-year-old and could play hardball if Man United come calling.

Landing Ugarte will be huge for the Red Devils as the Uruguayan wants to move to the Theatre of Dreams and has already reached a personal agreement with them.

PSG have already signed Portuguese defensive midfielder Joao Neves, and selling Ugarte will be in their best interests.

A loan deal with an option to buy could work for both clubs, and Mendes could come up with that option for them.
