Newcastle United midfielder Joe Willock is close to an England call-up and has been tracked by the national set-up, according to The Athletic journalist Chris Waugh.

Three Newcastle stars started for the Three Lions against the Republic of Ireland in the Nations League on Sunday – Tino Livramento, Lewis Hall and Antony Gordon.

Gordon got his first England goal in the 5-0 win at the weekend, and Sunday was the first time since 1997 that the Magpies have had three players start an England match.

They could have more when Thomas Tuchel starts his job as the next permanent England manager, with Willock tipped to be called up if he keeps impressing.

Injuries limited the 25-year-old from playing frequently for a while, and he will now look to prove his quality again after returning to full fitness.

The Newcastle star ended 2020-21 with eight goals in 14 appearances during his loan spell from Arsenal, earning a permanent six-year contract afterwards.

However, he was limited to only nine league games last term due to fitness issues, and his underwhelming form this term has been a massive frustration for many at the club.

While England are not short of options in the middle of the park, Willock brings unique qualities to the table, and not many players can carry possession in the dynamic way he does.

He has a chance to prove that he deserves to play for his country ahead of the next international break next March.

Sean Longstaff and Lewis Miley will also hope to break into the squad after watching teammates Hall and Livramento make their debuts.
