Arsenal bowed out of the Carabao Cup at the semi-final stage following a 4-0 aggregate defeat to Newcastle United.

The Gunners lost 2-0 in the first leg at the Emirates Stadium, and they had a tough task of overturning the deficit at St James’ Park last night.

Mikel Arteta’s side registered just three shots on target. Martin Odegaard was guilty of squandering a clear-cut scoring opportunity.

Kai Havertz was one of the worst performers. The German international had a good outing against Manchester City with a goal and an assist last weekend.

However, he struggled against the Magpies. Havertz registered just 11 passes in the game, losing eight out of 11 duels contested.

The 25-year-old lost possession 20 times and did not muster a single shot on target over 90 minutes last night.

Havertz has registered 15 goals and five assists this season, but most of his goal contributions have come at home.

He has struggled to replicate his performances on the road, and yesterday’s showing was another example of why Arsenal need a new striker.

Havertz has fared well as a makeshift number nine, but the Gunners need a specialist who can score consistently.

Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak outshone Havertz to show why Arsenal must break the bank to secure his services at the end of the campaign.

Manager Mikel Arteta was let down by Havertz yesterday, but part of the blame must go to the hierarchy, who failed to spend on a striker this winter.
