Atalanta announced that Italy international Giorgio Scalvini has successfully undergone surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
He suffered the knee injury during Sunday’s final game of the Serie A season, as Atalanta were beaten 3-2 at home by Fiorentina in the rescheduled fixture.
That injury ruled him out of the Italy squad for EURO 2024 and he is expected to be out of action for up to six months.
A statement from his club this evening confirmed that the operation was performed at the Villa Stuart clinic in Rome by Professor Mariani and was a complete success.
Scalvini had to have his anterior cruciate ligament in the left knee reconstructed using keyhole surgery.
He will immediately begin rehabilitation and treatment to make a full recovery, but is not expected back on the field until 2025.
The centre-back is a product of the Atalanta youth academy and is only 20 years old, yet already has eight senior caps for Italy and was in Luciano Spalletti’s group for the European Championship in Germany.
He made 44 competitive appearances for Atalanta this season, contributing two goals and three assists from defence, winning the Europa League.
