The winter transfer window came to a halt on Monday night without much activity of note at FC Barcelona, with the club focusing on registering Dani Olmo and Pau Victor while renewing key players like Pedri, Gavi, and Ronald Araujo.

Now, the focus will remain on continuing to build the sporting project, with two key decisions to be made: first, the situation of Robert Lewandowski as the first-choice striker and second, resolving the future of Frenkie de Jong.

The Dutchman has yet to renew his contract, which expires in 2026, and it has been made clear to him that if an agreement is not reached before the summer, he will be placed on the market.

If he wishes to remain at the club without extending his contract, it is most likely that he will not see regular playing time.

Saudi Arabia keen

Now, SPORT reports that two of the most powerful clubs in the Saudi Pro League are interested in him, and they have already informed his agents.

A transfer would be possible, and there would be no issue with paying him the same salary he currently earns at Barça, with the possibility of even multiplying it.

It is an attractive option for any player, but de Jong has always been reluctant to leave Barcelona, even when options to join Manchester United or PSG have been available.

For the time being, the Dutchman’s agents are exploring the market with the peace of mind that De Jong has a guaranteed contract until 2026, regardless of the threats made. Only a substantial sporting or financial offer could change the situation.

Increased role in recent weeks

Having struggled for relevancy under Hansi Flick after returning from injury, De Jong has been gaining prominence in the team in recent weeks and has shown signs of recovering his best form.

De Jong had not responded to Barcelona’s proposals initially, but now it appears he is more inclined to negotiate his future with the club.

The midfielder is happy at the club and in the city, and he is aware that a promising future project is being built. However, much remains to be done before an agreement is reached.
