Huddersfield Town are reportedly in talks with Ruben Selles over the possibility of becoming their new manager.

According to Alan Nixon, the former Hull City and Reading boss has come onto the Terriers’ radar since his dismissal by Hull last weekend.

Huddersfield have been without a manager since early March after relieving Michael Duff of his duties. Jon Worthington has taken the reins since then, but a new man is now set to step into the dugout at the John Smith’s Stadium this summer.

While Selles was not believed to be on the West Yorkshire outfit’s shortlist, his emergence as a possible candidate is thought to be a hugely attractive proposition for the club’s hierarchy.

Huddersfield have been alerted by Selles’ emergence

Since Huddersfield’s board decided that they would be holding off on making a permanent appointment until the end of the season, there have been numerous names linked with the Terriers.

There have been plenty of names mooted previously and former boss David Wagner was also reportedly offered the job, but with Selles becoming available recently, he has immediately shot to the forefront of the club’s thinking.

The Terriers had drawn up a shortlist which included St Mirren’s impressive boss Stephen Robinson, as well as two members of backroom staff at Premier League level, although Selles’ situation has seemingly cast those options aside for now.

The Spanish boss is familiar with League One, having enjoyed a successful stint there with Reading at the start of last season. Selles had to battle points deductions and transfer embargos during his time in Berkshire, but was still able to have one of the division’s youngest squads competing inside the play-off positions.

The work he did with the Royals is what ultimately landed him the Hull job, and there are hopes that by applying that knowledge of the third tier, he could have Huddersfield challenging at the top end of the division.

It is understood that the prior experience of League One, combined with the fact that no compensation package would be required to secure his services, has made him a key candidate for the Huddersfield board.

While the 41-year-old’s work with Reading was impressive, it could also be argued that he has been treated harshly at Hull. The Tigers were in the top half of the form table between Selles’ arrival and the end of the season, but he was rewarded by losing his job, despite keeping them in the Championship.

Huddersfield must get this next appointment right

After several years of frequent managerial changes, Huddersfield’s next appointment could have a crucial say in how the next few years pan out for the former Premier League club.

Neil Warnock, Darren Moore, Andre Breitenreiter, and Duff have all had spells in charge inside the last two seasons alone. Within that quartet, Huddersfield have tried and failed with several different styles of manager.

If they are to achieve success in their bid to return to the Championship within the next couple of seasons, then it is vital they select the right man this summer and then give him the time required to bring steady and continuous progress.

With the likes of Joe Taylor and Dion Charles (pictured) being added to the squad in January, Huddersfield have already assembled a fairly expensive squad at third tier level, and you would imagine that spending won’t cease in the summer, as they look to build a side capable of securing promotion.

With that in mind, whoever comes in as the new manager will likely have plenty of resources to mould the team into his image and build a promotion-ready squad.
