The Copa Libertadores quarterfinal second-legs are back underway Wednesday evening as four Brazilian giants were in action. Here is what went down.

São Paulo 1-1 Botafogo

Botafogo needed penalties but found a way past São Paulo after being the better teams over two legs, securing their path to the semifinals.

São Paulo showed little ambition to do more than sit in and make their visitors break the down, but the plan backfired as it only took them 15 minutes to do so. After a last-gasp save from Rafael, Thiago Almada was waiting to head home from point-blank range to open the scoring on the night and in the tie.

Despite going a goal down in the tie, São Paulo did little to spark their home fans until a controversial penalty call went the way of the hosts — a lifeline on the night.

But luck would not be on their side as veteran forward Lucas Moura skied his attempt from 12 yards.

While it appeared that the clash would fizzle out with the visitors snatching the win, the drama was ratcheted up in the dying minutes when Jonathan Calleri nabbed the equaliser after missing a sitter earlier in the game, sending the tie to penalties.

After a pair of saves from each keeper, Matheus Martins stepped up for the visitors and fired home to pip their hosts in the tie.

Atlético Mineiro 2-0 Fluminense

A Deyverson double saw Atlético Mineiro send Fluminense crashing out at the quarterfinal stage.

The match fell into it’s pattern almost from the first whistle as Atlético Mineiro poured on the pressure looking to find a leveller in the tie. The hosts were rampant, creating a flurry of chances to reclaim parity, but the ageless Thiago Silva was a rock in the back for Fluminense in the opening 45 minutes.

After the restart the door was finally busted open after plenty of knocking, and it took Thiago Silva finally getting beaten to a header for the ball to hit the back of the net. Half-time substitute Deyverson made the difference, coming off the bench to bag the opener just five minutes into the second interval.

Tackles flew in in the dying minutes, and somehow both sides finished the night with 11 men on the pitch, but the drama peaked in the final two minutes when Deyverson darted into the back-post to tap home a brilliant Hulk cross and send Atlético Mineiro through in stunning fashion.

Atlético Mineiro will now square off with Argentine giants River Plate in the semifinals.
