Bristol City have appointed Stephen Kirby as their new head coach on a two-year deal.

The Robins announced the news via a post on their official club website this morning.

The 39-year-old joins Bristol City from Barclays Women’s Super League club Leicester City where he has been coaching within the first team environment for the last two years. Kirby fills the managerial vacancy which was left by former Bristol City boss Lauren Smith who recently stepped down from her position to take up a head coach role with England Under-19s.

Kirby takes charge of a Bristol City side that have drawn their first two matches in this season’s Barclays Women’s Championship. The club are targeting an immediate return to the top flight following their relegation last season.

After appointing Kirby as Bristol City’s new head coach, chairman Gavin Marshall said “We are really pleased with the appointment of Steve.

“His coaching pedigree, his reputation in the game and his vision for taking this team to the next level really stood out during a thorough recruitment process.

“We also want to say a massive thank you to Loren Dykes and the staff for doing a great job of managing the team over the past three weeks.”

Kirby will take charge of Bristol City for the first time when they travel to London City Lionesses on Sunday.
