According to Football Transfers, Manuel Ugarte is thought to be higher up on United's shortlist at this stage, which is a boost for the Clarets in their quest to keep hold of him.

Berge first arrived at Turf Moor last summer, making the move from Sheffield United, who were also recently promoted at the time.

The Norwegian had been linked with a move away from the Blades for a decent chunk of his time at Bramall Lane, even though he had spent a part of his time in South Yorkshire out injured.

He enjoyed a fairly good 2023/24 campaign though, even with the Clarets struggling for much of it, with the midfielder showing his quality and arguably doing enough to earn another move this summer.

However, the Lancashire side have managed to retain the majority of their key first-teamers from last season.

Arijanet Muric and Charlie Taylor are the only two key players to have been sold in recent months, even though the Lancashire side haven't been afraid to spend this summer, with Maxime Esteve, Etienne Green, Andreas Hountondji, Lucas Pires and Mike Tresor all being signed for transfer fees this summer.

With this spending in mind, it wouldn't be a shock to see some first-teamers leave before the summer transfer window closes.

Manchester United not prioritising Sander Berge move

Berge is on United's radar, but according to Football Transfers, United are prioritising a move for Paris St-Germain midfielder Ugarte at this point.

At this stage, it's believed that the Clarets are valuing the Norwegian at around €25m, a sizeable amount but an amount that the Red Devils will probably be able to afford.

Ugarte, meanwhile, is thought to be valued at €60m.

Burnley could benefit from retaining Sander Berge

The Clarets saw Berge shine at times last season, with the Norwegian doing well.

He has already performed in the Championship before, so it shouldn't take him too long to settle back into life in the second tier if he stays.

Not only can he be a real asset in the middle of the park, but he can also contribute a great deal in the final third.

It could be argued that the Lancashire side have lots of quality already, with the likes of Wilson Odobert, Luca Koleosho, Lyle Foster and Wout Weghorst all able to thrive in the final third.

But some attackers could potentially depart Turf Moor before the end of the transfer window and with this in mind, retaining someone like Berge could be ideal.

He still has plenty of time left on his contract and with this in mind, they shouldn't be under too much pressure to sell him, especially with the Clarets having other players they can cash in on.
