Reports in Italy suggest that Simone Inzaghi could drop his captain and last season’s top goalscorer Lautaro Martinez for Inter’s heavyweight Champions League clash against Manchester City on Wednesday night.

Multiple outlets including Sky, La Gazzetta and Corriere dello Sport suggest that Inzaghi could instead call upon Mehdi Taremi to partner the man in form, Marcus Thuram, who has four goals from his first four Serie A matches of the campaign.

There are several calls for Inzaghi to make, as he will have to do without star wing-back Federico Dimarco, who misses out with a muscular injury. Carlos Augusto is expected to replace him.

Following his decision to rest several players during Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Monza in Serie A, Inzaghi could also welcome Nicolo Barella and Hakan Calhanoglu into the midfield. They could be joined by summer recruit Piotr Zielinski.

Alessandro Bastoni, Francesco Acerbi and Yann Aurel Bisseck are all expected to return to the back three.

Pep Guardiola is also likely to name a strong XI for the re-match of the 2023 Champions League final, with Erling Haaland practically guaranteed to start up top. He could be joined by the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Rodi and Ilkay Gündogan.

Kick-off is due at 20.00 BST.
