The 31-year-old Birkenhead-born midfielder has joined the Bantams on a free transfer following their automatic promotion to League One, which was clinched in dramatic fashion on the final day of the season thanks to an Antoni Sarcevic goal deep into second-half stoppage-time.

Graham Alexander’s side had spent the last six seasons in the fourth-tier of English football but will return to League One alongside Doncaster Rovers and Port Vale, with the West Yorkshire outfit already beginning what should be a busy summer transfer window.

Power left England back in 2023 when he joined now Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah in the Saudi second-tier before a move to Danish Superliga side AGF in September 2024.

Power took to Instagram after the confirmation of his move to post images of him posing with the Bradford shirt at Valley Parade, saying: “Delighted with this. New home @officialbantams Can’t wait to get going."

In response to his post, several players got in touch to express their congratulations, such as Ipswich Town captain Samy Morsy and former Fleetwood Town striker David Ball, as well as Wyke and Coady.

His former Wigan Athletic and Sunderland teammate Wyke, who played for Bradford for 18 months following a move from Carlisle United in 2017, scoring 22 goals in 56 League One appearances, posted: “Love it mate!!! Some club."

Coady, now at Leicester City, is someone who has not played with Power but is a fellow Liverpudlian, said: “Love it mate … top stuff.”

Good start to the summer for Bradford

Bringing in a player of Power’s pedigree, quality and experience as their first signing of the summer, having gained a long-awaited promotion back to the third-tier, would have to be viewed as a positive start to the window for the Bantams.

Power came through the academy at local club Tranmere Rovers and made 127 appearances for the so-called Super White Army before moving to Wigan in the summer of 2015 in League One.

He helped Latics gain two promotions from League One to the Championship before leaving for Sunderland in the summer of 2018, at the same time as Wyke moved from Bradford, and making 137 appearances for the Black Cats over a three-year stint.

He returned to Wigan, again at the same time as Wyke made the move from Sunderland, once again back in League One, in the 2021/22 season, and was a key man as they gained promotion to the second-tier before then playing 39 times in the second division for them ahead of his move to Al Qadsiah, now the home of the Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, a couple of years ago.

Bradford announced their retained list the other day with the likes of Callum Johnson, Romoney Crichlow, Jamie Walker and Vadaine Oliver being released, whilst goalkeeper Sam Walker and club captain Richie Smallwood are among those in negotiations with the club over their respective futures.
