The Women’s Champions League was back in action Wednesday evening with four games on the docket. Here is what happened around the grounds.
Scorers: Reiten (P) 62′, Chavas (OG) 70′ ; Del Castillo 69′
Chelsea moved three points clear in Group D with a narrow victory over basement-dwellers Real Madrid in London.
It took until past the hour mark but the Blues took the lead through a Guro Reiten strike from the penalty-spot, opening the floodgates for the next 10 minutes.
While Real Madrid equalised thanks to a Athenea del Castillo goal just seven minutes later, disaster struck when a Mylène Chavas own-goal restored the Blues lead just one minute later.
Scorers: Katoto 6′, 25′, Geyoro 39′ ; Leuchter 31′
PSG moved to the top of Group C after defeating Ajax.
It was a battle for first in Paris, but the home side cruised past their Dutch visitors thanks to a brace from Marie-Antoinette Katoto.
A third goal from midfielder Grace Geyoro would be all the Parisians would need to collect three points and take the driver’s seat in the group.
Scorers: Giacinti 33′ Giugliano 90+3′ ; Schüller 87′, 90+6′
Late fireworks saw Bayern snatch a point away to Roma to send the Serie A leaders down to the bottom of Group C.
Despite Bayern’s domination of the possession in the opening 45 minutes, it was Roma who snatched one against the run of play to open the scoring.
Veteran forward Valentina Giacinti’s lone goal past the half-hour mark was all Roma needed to take a lead into the dressing room at half-time.
While it looked like the Italian side would hold on for all three points, Lea Schüller appeared to pop up in the dying minutes to score and snatch a point for the visitors, but her goal opened up the floodgates.
Roma responded to the late dagger with one of their own through Manuela Giugliano, who put the hosts ahead again in stoppage time.
Bayern’s persistence wore off however, as they reclaimed parity for a second time in ten minutes when Schüller bagged her second to earn the draw.
Häcken held Paris FC to a goalless draw at home hang on to second place in Group D after five games.
It will not go down as an opening 45 minutes that was easy on the eye for the neutrals, as both sides struggled to find the quality needed in front of goal, but it was not for a lack of trying.
There would be no fireworks after the break either, as the two sides hit a wall and settled for a point-a-piece.
