Caicedo went over the ball and caught the Spurs midnight on his shin with his studs, but escaped without being shown a yellow card. VAR looked at the incident and agreed with the referee.

Carragher, on Sky Sports commentatory, immediately said: "I was absolutely certain it was going to be a red card. They've got away with a huge one there, Chelsea."

The Premier League released a statement soon after, which read: "The Premier League Match Centre then released the following statement: "VAR checked for a potential red card following a challenge by Caicedo on Sarr and confirmed the referee’s call of no serious foul play."

Expanding on the incident after the game, Carragher said: "[Caicedo] just comes in, nowhere near the ball. To me it seemed like the most obvious red card you'll see.

He added: "I've seen it a couple of time and think 'that's a definite red card, this is him going off and it's going to be 10 vs 11'.

"And then I hear the VAR, and as soon as we hear [that he won't be sent off] me and [commentator] Peter Drury looked at each other in astonishment. I could not believe it."
