Chelsea are ready to sell Christopher Nkunku this summer after being ‘underwhelmed’ by recent performances.
Nkunku has endured a tough time at Chelsea since signing from RB Leipzig in a £52m deal in 2023. The Frenchman’s debut season was decimated by injuries that restricted him to just two Premier League starts.
Enzo Maresca has favoured Nicolas Jackson at centre-forward this season with Nkunku’s minutes again limited. The 27-year-old has featured regularly of late in the absence of the injured Jackson but has struggled to make an impact.
Following Jackson’s injury, Maresca reiterated his stance that he does not see Nkunku as a centre-forward. However, the presence of Cole Palmer has limited his opportunity in an attacking midfield position.
“I said since day one that Christo is not a nine, he is an attacking midfielder,” Maresca said in February.
“We know very well that Christo is not a nine. “They (Nkunku and Jackson) are different on the ball and off the ball. Sometimes we complain about players but then when they don’t play, you realise how important they are.”
According to GiveMeSport, Chelsea are prepared to part ways with the player. Nkunku has been linked with a potential return to the Bundesliga, while Manchester United have been tentatively credited with interest.
Nkunku scored prolifically during his time in Germany with 70 goals in 177 appearances for Leipzig. He was named Bundesliga Player of the Season in 2021/22 and was the joint-leading scorer in the division in 2022/23.
