2024 has been another year filled with unforgettable City matches.
Whether it’s Pep Guardiola’s Premier League champions, Gareth Taylor’s team coming so close to Barclays Women’s Super League glory or our FA Youth Cup victors, it’s been another special 12 months to be a City fan.
Along the way to success, there will always be plenty of matches won by individual moments of brilliance or by sheer determination to get the result.
Here we reflect on some games that made 2024 another year to remember.
Newcastle 2-3 City, Premier League, 13 January 2024
Bernardo Silva opened the scoring for us with a goal of true quality in a hugely entertaining first half.
Despite our dominance in that opening period, we went in behind courtesy of a quickfire double from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.
It stayed that way until Kevin De Bruyne’s return to Premier League action after a five-month lay-off through injury.
It took him five minutes to level matters with a classy finish on the move and the iconic playmaker ensured all three points for Pep Guardiola’s men when he played in Oscar Bobb with a precision pass in injury time, the young starlet showing ice-cold composure to finish and send our away fans into delirium.
Chelsea 0-1 City, Barclays Women’s Super League, 16 February 2024
In a hard fought top-of-the-table clash, Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw’s strike on 14 minutes proved the difference at Kingsmeadow as we extended our winning streak to 11 straight matches.
What’s more, it ended the Londoners’ 33-match unbeaten run on home soil.Although the hosts pushed for an equaliser, we weathered a late storm from Emma Hayes’ side and held on for a victory which could prove seismic in the title race.
We remained second in the table, moving level on points with the league leaders as the business end of the term approached.
City 3-1 Manchester United, Premier League, 3 March 2024
We were deserved winners at a raucous Etihad Stadium but needed a second half comeback in order to complete a Premier League double over Manchester United.
Phil Foden was the hero, scoring twice to turn the game around after Marcus Rashford’s opener against the run of play for the hosts.
Rashford’s strike in the eighth minute struck the crossbar and deflected down into the goal, leaving Ederson with no chance.
We responded positively but had to wait until the 56th minute to level the scores.Foden shimmied in from the right and unleashed a fearsome effort that set off straight into the top corner.
Our Academy graduate doubled his tally for the day and put us ahead in the 80th minute after a neat one-two with Julian Alvarez.
Nerves were settled and three points sealed in added time when Erling Haaland calmly added our third.
City 3-1 Manchester United, Barclays Women’s Super League, 23 March 2024
After a cagey opening, City took the lead when Jess Park ghosted in to volley home Leila Ouahabi‘s cross.
The midfielder doubled her tally on the stroke of half-time when she tapped Alanna Kennedy‘s knockdown in from close-range after a well-worked corner routine.
And the hosts were in dreamland just 30 seconds after the restart when Park fed Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw in behind for City’s third.
It was the Jamaican’s 68th goal for the Club, seeing her become our record goalscorer in the process.
United pulled one back with 15 to play when Hannah Blundell’s cross was deflected into the net by Kerstin Casparij, but City held on to claim a third Manchester derby win of the season.
In the process, we also extended our winning run in the WSL to a remarkable 11 matches, a sequence which began back in November away to United.
Real Madrid 3-3 City, Champions League, 9 April 2024
Bernardo Silva shocked the home faithful with an opening goal on two minutes, curling home a cheeky 25-yard free-kick which took goalkeeper Andriy Lunin completely by surprise.
Two deflected efforts put 14-time competition winners Madrid ahead.
Eduardo Camavinga’s hopeful strike smashed against Ruben Dias and spun into the far corner of Stefan Ortega Moreno’s goal before Rodrygo got on to a clever Vinicius Jr ball forward before finishing off Manuel Akanji‘s heel.
City came out firing in the second period and took the lead following a brace of brilliant strikes from Phil Foden and Josko Gvardiol, who bagged his first goal for the club.
But the hosts weren’t finished and levelled after another fine drive, this time from Federico Valverde.
The draw sets us up for an exciting second leg at the Etihad, with a place in the semi-finals the prize for the winners.
City 4-0 Leeds United, FA Youth Cup final, 10 May 2024
Ben Wilkinson’s young side carved their name into the history books as his Under-18s secured what was the Club’s fourth FA Youth Cup triumph in dominant style.
In front of a large, enthusiastic crowd, City dominated affairs but were unable to make a first half breakthrough.
All that changed in the second half though as strikes from Justin Oboavwoduo, Jaden Heskey, Stephen Mfuni and Matty Warhurst converted that dominance into tangible reward.
It capped another season to remember for Wilkinson’s charges and added to our 2020, 2008 and 1986 roll calls of Youth Cup honour.
Spurs 0-2 City, Premier League, 14 May 2024
Erling Haaland claimed a second half brace as Pep Guardiola’s side recorded a first-ever league win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – and eighth league triumph in a row.
It was a tense, eventful game that also saw substitute keeper Stefan Ortega Moreno, who came on for the injured Ederson in the second half, produce a series of outstanding saves to deny Spurs.
This latest victory helped moved back on top of the Premier League table, moving us two points clear of Arsenal.
It also meant that were we to beat West Ham at the Etihad a few days later then City would be crowned champions for a fourth season in a row - a feat no other English men’s side has achieved.
City 3-1 West Ham, Premier League, 19 May 2024
Pep Guardiola’s side needed a win at the Etihad Stadium in our last game to guarantee finishing top of the Premier League.
And we made the perfect start when Phil Foden smashed home a thunderous strike into the top corner inside two minutes.
He then slotted home Jeremy Doku’s cross to double our lead but Mohammed Kudus pulled a goal back just before half-time with a spectacular overhead kick.
It could have been an edgy second half but we regained our two-goal lead just before the hour when Rodrigo sidefooted home to send the Etihad into wild celebrations.
And they continued long after the full-time whistle as Kyle Walker lifted the Premier League trophy and City secured the title for a sixth time in seven years.
City 2-0 Barcelona, Women’s Champions League, 9 October 2024
Gareth Taylor‘s side marked our return to the UEFA Champions League proper by beating the holders in front of a record Joie Stadium crowd.
Naomi Layzell opened the scoring with her first senior goal, firing home from a corner after meeting Vivianne Miedema‘s knockdown at the far post.
She then set up Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw with 20 to play, allowing the Jamaican to round Barcelona stopper Cata Coll and fire into an empty net.
It was just rewards for City, who became only the second side in the last 80 matches to prevent the visitors from scoring.
Both sides had further chances to score with Caroline Graham Hansen and Lauren Hemp both hitting the post, but it was the Blues who ultimately came out on top in our Group D opener.
City 6-1 Feyenoord, UEFA Youth League, 26 November 2024
A second half hat-trick from substitute Ryan McAidoo moved the Blues closer to knockout stage qualification against our Dutch opponents.
City had taken a two-goal lead in at the break thanks to goals from Reigan Heskey and Farid Alfa-Ruprecht.
However, the visitors halved the deficit from the penalty spot soon after the restart having already squandered two huge chances in the opening 45.
Ben Wilkinson‘s side responded in perfect fashion though, with McAidoo scoring twice with his first two touches before Heskey added his second of the game with a deflected effort.
McAidoo then rounded off the scoring from the penalty spot to seal a deserved three points and take City just one point from securing passage to the knockout stages.
