As reported by , Clermont are looking at signing Angers’ goalkeeper Paul Bernardoni for next season to solve the goalkeeping issues of their first-ever Ligue 1 campaign.
Last season, the first-choice position was shared between Ouparine Djoco and Arthur Desmas. Desmas started the season as number one, as he was for the club’s promotion season from the second tier, but struggled in the French top flight and was eventually dropped for Djoco. Djoco’s proved relatively solid by comparison, but his overall form fluctuated as he struggled to truly assert himself.
Bernardoni, meanwhile, started the season at Angers before surpassingly being loaned to struggling Saint-Etienne, taking the club-record signing’s sizeable €75,000 monthly salary off the wage bill in the short term. Despite previously standing out with Le SCO, Bernardoni endured a difficult season and was unable to re-discover his best form with Les Verts who were relegated via a penalty shoot-out defeat to Auxerre in the play-offs.
Although his experience of 154 Ligue 1 games will help Clermont, Bernardoni’s wages, however, would also be an issue for the club as he returns to Angers. The 25-year-old has already passed through Angers, Saint-Etienne, Bordeaux, Troyes and Nîmes, as well as Clermont, where he kept 14 clean sheets in the 2017/18 Ligue 2 season.
