Napoli coach Antonio Conte has provided a brief update on the state of the talks between the club and star winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia over a new contract extension, explaining that there are talks, but that there are also other priorities for the team first and foremost.

Conte confirms Kvaratskhelia talks ‘been discussed for a while now’

Conte confirmed that talks between Napoli and Kvaratskhelia’s party have been ongoing ‘for a while now’, but insisted that the facts and figures of the operation are down to the sporting director to disclose.

The Partenopei coach is hopeful that Kvaratskhelia will sign a new contract at the Stadio Maradona, but explained that he has asked all of his players to give their full commitment until the end of the season, regardless of their contractual situation.

Conte feels that the Georgian has delivered on everything that has been asked of him so far this term, and talked about his hopes to see him put pen to paper on a new deal. He did admit, however, that ‘anything’ can happen in football.

“It’s been discussed for a while now. There are definitely conversations happening between the club and the player and his entourage,” Conte confirmed during his pre-Lecce press conference on Thursday.

“Going into precise details is the club and sporting director’s job, they’ll eventually talk figures.

“I won’t go into specifics, all I can say is that Kvara gives me everything I ask of him, he’s focussed on this season, he’s serious, a professional, a leader by example. This season is really important for us, I hope things can be sorted out and that an agreement is found.

“But I also know that anything can happen in football and that there has to be an agreement that pleases everyone. Whatever the case, I ask everyone to be at their best until the end of the season. I won’t go beyond that, regardless of whether an agreement is reached or not, we all have to be focussed on what we are doing.”
