Eintracht Frankfurt’s versatile attacker Omar Marmoush is looming as a player Manchester City could add in the January transfer window. The Egyptian international, who can play on either wing, upfront, or as a number 10, would immediately improve Pep Guardiola’s attacking options. But if City do land Marmoush could that see James McAtee depart for more opportunities? A new report indicates that scenario is a real possibility. Based on McAtee’s lack of opportunities this season you could understand him seeking a prominent role elsewhere if Marmoush arrives at the Etihad this month.

Jamie Jackson and Jacob Steinberg have reported for the Guardian that Manchester City are targeting Omar Marmoush to strengthen their attack. By now, that fact is well known. It is also included in the Guardian’s report that if City do sign Marmoush James McAtee could consider his options. Furthermore, Jackson and Steinberg add that McAtee is eager for more opportunities to play. Lastly, the Guardian report adds that Fulham, West Ham and Ipswich Town are monitoring McAtee’s situation.

Manchester City don’t want to sell anyone this month but James McAtee’s situation is different to other City players.

Pol Ballús and David Ornstein have reported for the Athletic that it is unlikely that any player will depart Manchester City this month. But you do get the sense that if Marmoush arrives at City this month, McAtee could consider his options. That would be an understandable move on his part.

As we have seen this season McAtee has suffered from a lack of opportunities. Outside of his cameo appearance against Leicester City, he has barely played this season. He has the talent to make it at the highest level but he suffers from a lack of opportunities. If Marmoush did arrive at the Etihad this month that would create more competition for places in Guardiola’s squad. Given that McAtee has struggled for opportunities already this season, he may be hard-pressed to force his way into Pep Guardiola’s lineup if Marmoush arrives at the Etihad. Based on this fact it wouldn’t be a surprise to see McAtee seek a move if City land Omar Marmoush.

If Manchester City sign Omar Marmoush, it may cause a ripple effect amongst City’s squad. That could see McAtee seek opportunities elsewhere. That is a story to monitor over the coming weeks. But it is dependent on if City sign Marmoush.
