Birmingham City were interested in doing a deal for Rangers defender Jack Simpson but an agreement couldn’t be reached before the deadline.

The centre-back moved to Ibrox in the winter window last year but he struggled to establish himself as a regular under Steven Gerrard and it’s been a similar story since Giovanni van Bronckhorst succeeded him in the dugout despite injury issues at the back for the Glasgow outfit.

Therefore, a move in the January window seemed likely and Telegraph reporter Mike McGrath revealed last night that Blues had looked to sign the player, who was also on Middlesbrough’s radar.

“Birmingham also asked about Rangers defender Jack Simpson but it was left too late to get deal done. Middlesbrough were also interested but he is set to stay where he is.”

Lee Bowyer had a busy window, which included changing the defence after he allowed Harlee Dean to depart and Dion Sanderson was recalled by Wolves.

The arrival of Teden Mengi eased any major concerns but Blues clearly felt they could’ve done with another option.

This is a shame for all parties because, as mentioned, Birmingham are perhaps one player short at the back and Simpson would’ve been a good addition.

As well as that, the player is not getting minutes under van Bronckhorst, something which isn’t going to change as Filip Helander closes in on a return to full fitness.

So, this would’ve worked out for both clubs but that’s the risk when you leave it late in the day, and it will now be interesting to see if this is revisited in the summer.
