Former Newcastle United center-forward Obafemi Martins hails Inter Milan as the frontrunners in a ruthless Scudetto race.
During an exclusive interview with Flashscore, the 40-year-old discussed Inter’s chances of winning a second successive Serie A title.
Inter last won back-to-back league crowns in 2010.
However, Simone Inzaghi has positioned the Nerazzurri well to replicate that feat this season.
Monday’s scintillating 6-0 romping of Lazio saw Inter set a new outright record in Serie A.
Indeed, Inzaghi’s charges became the first team in the division’s history to score 46 away goals in a single calendar year.
Furthermore, a remarkable performance at the Stadio Olimpico extended Inter’s unbeaten league streak to ten matches.
Those are all positive signs, but they remain three points adrift of pacesetters Atalanta and one short of second-placed Napoli.
Former Newcastle United Star Obafemi Martins Backs Inter Milan to Win Another Serie A Title This Season
“It depends on their determination,” Martins started.
“When you’re trailing a team by three or four points in Serie A, overtaking them becomes quite challenging.
“No one expected them to clinch the title last season, yet they defied the odds to become league champions.
“This season, I hope they can replicate that success. But it won’t come easy with strong competitors like Atalanta and Napoli in the mix.
“To achieve this, they must consistently win their games and hope rivals lose.
“They have a solid squad performing exceptionally well right now, and if they maintain this form, anything is possible.”
Inter are on the verge of securing automatic knockout qualification at Europe’s top table.
But Martins insists they still have a long way to go to bring home the title for the first time in 15 years.
“It’s too early to predict a Champions League winner,” he claimed.
“While playing a draw at Manchester City and defeating Arsenal were impressive, it doesn’t guarantee success.
“The competition is long, and there are still many challenges ahead before a clear favorite emerges.
“They must first reach the semi-finals before any solid judgments can be made. Until then, it’s a wait-and-see situation to evaluate their true potential in the Champions League.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m an Inter Milan fan for life and fully believe in their potential because I know what they’re capable of on a good day.
“But we need to manage expectations carefully to avoid putting undue pressure on the team.”
Inzaghi has achieved incredible things with Inter since replacing Antonio Conte in the dugout three years ago.
“Inter Milan are a massive club with a rich history,” Martins added.
“And while previous managers have done well, what stands out about Inzaghi is his focus on nurturing the younger generation.
“The team plays cohesively, which makes this Inter side unique and exciting.”
