The Hatters managed to come away from the all-important contest with a point after a late equaliser.

Luton Town's last-gasp equaliser against Stoke City in midweek has given them a puncher's chance of staying up.

The Hatters have been one of the surprise teams of the 2024/25 Championship season, and not in a good way.

Many people predicted them to be in the fight for promotion in this campaign given their valiant efforts in the Premier League.

But they have not been able to stop the slide, and, if they don't get a grip on things soon, they could be back down to League One before they know it.

It's been six years since Luton were last in the third division. From then up until the start of this season, the club had been on a gradual upwards trajectory that led them to the country's top footballing table. Now they are heading down a much different path.

Luton's equaliser vs Stoke gives them a fighting chance at survival

Millenic Alli's late effort against the Potters on Tuesday, to secure a 1-1 draw at the bet365 Stadium, night helped to boost the hopes that they could still survive the drop, although they are not in control of their fate.

Former EFL player and Sky Sports pundit David Prutton believes Alli's goal could play a big role in Luton's race for Championship survival.

He exclusively told Football League World: "Huge late goal for Luton as well, given the fact that they were up against a team that is down there with them. It's very, very important to keep them within touching distance, which they did.

"I wouldn't have boxed them off if they had lost, but it would have looked to have been very, very difficult for them to climb. But the fact that they nicked that last-minute winner equaliser after a strong point against Leeds, again, we talk about Leeds' fight, but it shows us Luton's fight.

"Hopefully for them and Matt Bloomfield it isn't too little, too late."

Luton must undergo a major inquiry into 2024/25 failures

This season has been a complete disaster from top to bottom for the Hatters. What should have been a season to re-stabilise and think about a return to the Premier League has turned into one of panic, urgent action and worry.

Both possibilities - relegation and survival - are still on the board with a small number of games left to play. Regardless of what outcome comes to be, the club have to analyse what went wrong over the summer. Was it all on Rob Edwards' shoulders? Was it a problem with the squad? Was it complacency? They have to find that answer so that they can get back to the path of progress that they were previously on.
