FA Cup round up

This weekend marked the third round of the 24/25 FA Cup third round proper - albeit some games were as early as Thursday night. With it, there was action for Tottenham Hotspur loanees. Let's see how they got on.

How things went down for Tottenham loanees in the FA Cup

New Stoke City manager Mark Robins started Ashley Phillips for their trip to divisional rivals Sunderland, making it two starts from two for the young Spurs defender under his new boss. It would be the dream start for the Potters, who would take the lead from the spot after just four minutes of the game.

That would be the only goal of the first half, however Sunderland would score nearly 20 minutes into the second half. This was the first time that Phillips and Stoke had conceded a goal since Boxing Day. In the end, that would be the final goal of the 90 minutes, and we were heading to extra-time.

After 112 minutes, Stoke would retake the lead, and that would be enough to secure their passage into the fourth round. As for Phillips, he played the whole 120 minutes, recording; eight clearances, one blocked shot, four interceptions, four tackles, 4/5 ground duels, and 110 touches of the ball.

Elsewhere, Dane Scarlett was named in the starting XI for the first time since Gary Rowett took over from Des Buckingham, for their tie at Exeter City. Interesting to note that their other striker, Mark Harris, whom went off injured in the draw at Preston North End last time out, was not in the match day squad. This injury could represent a big opportunity for the on loan Spurs striker to get a consistent run of games.

After 14 minutes, Oxford would take the lead. After springing a quick counter, Scarlett was played away down the right hand side, with the 20-year old putting in an exquisite low cross for Matt Phillips to score at the back post. However, two goals from their hosts meant that Rowett's side would be trailing heading into the half time interval.

Things would get worse for the U's, as 19 minutes into the second half, Exeter doubled their lead, making it 3-1, with Oxford heading for their first defeat under Rowett. After a late red card, their misery was ensued - as they exited the FA Cup.

Meanwhile, there would be no action for Josh Keeley and Jamie Donley's Leyton Orient, as their home tie with Championship side Derby County was postponed. Likewise for Matthew Craig and his new side, as Mansfield's tie at home to Wigan Athletic was called off. So, essentially, this is very much like the Championship loan watches.
