Frank Lampard has been charged by the FA following his reaction to Coventry City's defeat to Burnley last week.
Coventry City boss Frank Lampard has been charged with misconduct by the FA following his behaviour after the final whistle in the recent defeat to Burnley.
The Sky Blues were beaten by the Clarets in what was a huge game for both clubs, with a Jaidon Anthony brace enough for Scott Parker’s side after Haji Wright had put the hosts ahead.
Despite the USA international scoring from an offside position, Coventry were frustrated by the referee at full-time. Lampard raced onto the pitch to confront referee James Bell, who was subjected to jeers and chants from the home crowd, and the ex-Derby County and Chelsea head coach was promptly dismissed for his antics.
As confirmed by the BBC, the FA say that Lampard ‘allegedly acted in an improper manner and/or used insulting and/or abusive words and/or behaviour towards a match official around the field of play after the final whistle which led to his dismissal’.
As well as that, Coventry’s performance analyst, Connor Lawley, has been hit with the same charge for his outburst that came in the tunnel, and the update confirms that they have until Monday to respond.
Interestingly, this is the third time that Lampard has been charged by the FA in his career as a manager, with the previous incidents coming at Derby County and Everton.
Lampard was charged with improper conduct during Derby County's 2-2 draw with Birmingham City back in April 2019, while he received a £30,000 fine for comments made on Stuart Attwell's decision to not award a penalty for Anthony Gordon after the winger was perceived to have been brought down by Joel Matip in the Merseyside Derby.
It’s too soon to say whether Lampard will be hit with a touchline ban, as he still has time to contest the charge, so we need to see how it plays out.
Plus, even if he is hit with a punishment, there’s no guarantee that it will be a touchline ban.
But, it would be far from ideal for Coventry if they didn’t have the manager in the dugout for any of their upcoming games.
Lampard is an active coach on the sideline, so he would be missed, even if he will obviously still be the one making the decisions from higher up.
Either way, though, Coventry are in a very good position going into the run-in, with the side bouncing back from the defeat to Burnley by beating Portsmouth at the CBS Arena on Wednesday night.
The Sky Blues have been navigating a tricky fixture list, but the win over Portsmouth, which came thanks to a stunning stoppage time effort from Jamie Paterson, means they are back in the play-offs with five games to go.
The ability to score late goals is a fantastic trait for the team to have, and that ultimately comes from the manager, who has instilled a belief in the group that they can get results.
