A man who allegedly assaulted Jack Grealish at the end of the Manchester derby at Old Trafford on Sunday has been arrested, formally charged and will now appear in court.

The incident was reported to have taken place at full-time following the 0-0 draw, near the tunnel in the south west corner of the stadium as Grealish was leaving the pitch.

A Greater Manchester Police statement confirmed of the arrest: "Alfie Holt of Haven Drive, Droyslden, has been charged with assault.

"He will appear at Manchester Magistrates Court in July. This charge relates to an incident which took place at Old Trafford [on Sunday]."

Grealish appeared as a substitute for the final 16 minutes plus stoppage time. Despite it being derby day and United in with a chance to complete just a second league double over their fierce rivals for only the second time since 2010, it was a flat atmosphere at Old Trafford.

In addition to the allegations of physical assault on Grealish, City attacker Phil Foden was also the subject of verbal abuse regarding his mother, which Pep Guardiola described as "lacking class".

The City boss commented: "We are so exposed, the people who are now on the screen in world football - managers, owners, and football players, especially.

"Honestly, I don't understand the mind of the people, involving the mum from Phil, being involved in that. It's a lack of integrity, class - and they should be ashamed. But it's what it is, it's happening everywhere I would say, not just in UK, everywhere."

The game, which finished 0-0, did little to help United's poor position in the Premier League, nor did it do much for City's hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League. This season's title favourites are lowly sixth after Newcastle United's 3-0 win over Leicester City on Monday night, a point behind the Magpies and fourth-placed Chelsea.
