Marcos Alonso, a former Barcelona defender, has spoken about his approach to facing his old club as a member of Celta Vigo.

After his contract with Barcelona ended last summer, Alonso moved to Celta Vigo, where he has regained regular playing time. Now, as he prepares to take on his former team, he reflects on what the match means for him and his current club.

The defender acknowledged that facing Barcelona will be a special occasion for several reasons. Firstly, it is a clash against the current La Liga leaders, which adds significance to the game.

Alonso believes that Celta Vigo has shown in previous matches that they are capable of competing with top teams, even if the results haven’t gone their way.

“A special match, especially because we are playing against the leader. We have already shown in previous matches, against important teams, that we can compete against anyone but we have not managed to get any good results,” he began saying.

Reflecting on his time at Barcelona, Alonso harbours no resentment over his lack of playing time. He attributes the challenges he faced last season to limited continuity and injury struggles.

“Not at all. I don’t need any revenge. Last year I didn’t have any continuity and it’s complicated, especially because of the injury.”

Despite these setbacks, he expresses gratitude for his current situation, enjoying football once again with Celta Vigo and relishing the chance to take part in such significant fixtures.

“Now I’m enjoying football again, I’m very happy, and I’m really looking forward to the match.”

Alonso has also made it clear that if he scores against Barcelona, he will celebrate the goal. “I have always done that when I have scored,” he noted.

For him, it is a natural reaction and not influenced by his past affiliation with the club. His focus remains on contributing to his team’s success, regardless of the opponent.
