Bayer Leverkusen have assessed the possibility and financial aspects of signing Stefan Ortega Moreno from Manchester City this summer, according to reports from Germany.
There has been long-standing speculation on the future of Ortega Moreno, who has spent the entirety of his time at the Etihad Stadium as backup to first-choice goalkeeper Ederson – since joining City on a free transfer from Arminia Bielefeld in 2022.
Pep Guardiola has often called upon Ortega Moreno in the last few seasons when Ederson has struggled to keep clean sheets, with the former largely proving to be a reliable understudy and regularly receiving plaudits for his performances between the sticks for the Blues.
Ortega Moreno has had his head turned by interest from several clubs in Germany in the last 18-24 months – and has addressed the chances of a return to his homeland in several interviews since the start of the 2023-24 season.
Whilst on international duty with the Germany National Team in March, the 32-year-old raised uncertainty on his future in Manchester by saying he is yet to decide what the future holds for him at City.
Ortega Moreno’s current deal at the Etihad Stadium runs till next summer and with Manchester City set to undergo a major squad revamp at the end of the season, there are rising doubts over his future as well as that of Ederson’s.
Ederson was heavily linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League in 2023 but it is believed no suitor club was able to match his valuation, with the Brazilian staying on with Manchester City for a seventh season since joining from Benfica for £35 million in 2017.
It is not beyond the realms of possibility that Ederson and Ortega Moreno could both leave City in the summer, with standards falling for the Blues in goal this season and the goalkeeper duo often costing their side in big games with a series of high-profile errors.
As per a new report from German outlet Kicker, as relayed by Sport Witness, Bayer Leverkusen value Ortega Moreno between €5-8 million and have added the 32-year-old to their summer transfer window wishlist.
Leverkusen are keen to find a capable backup to first-choice goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky though it has to be said it is highly unlikely Ortega Moreno would leave City to join a club where he would not be number one.
Bild have doubled down Kicker’s claim by adding that Leverkusen have “already made contacts” to enquire about Ortega Moreno, as it remains to be seen what the coming months hold for the Manchester City star, who could be number one for Guardiola next term if Ederson is sold.
