Marco Silva Linked with Tottenham Job as Postecoglou Faces Uncertain Future

Fulham manager Marco Silva has emerged as a potential candidate for the Tottenham Hotspur job, should Daniel Levy decide to part ways with Ange Postecoglou. According to ESPN’s James Olley on The Football Reporters, Silva is open to the move, adding another name to the growing list of managers linked with the north London club.

Postecoglou Under Pressure as Spurs Struggle

Tottenham’s dismal form has placed Ange Postecoglou under increasing scrutiny. Spurs are winless in their last seven home league matches (D2 L5), marking their worst run since 2008 – ironically, the last year they lifted a trophy.

Postecoglou’s side currently sit 15th in the Premier League, just 10 points above the relegation zone after Everton’s victory over Crystal Palace saw them slip a place lower. A win against Manchester United on Sunday could lift them to 12th, thanks to their superior goal difference.

However, recent exits from the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, combined with just one win in their last eight league games, have fuelled speculation over Postecoglou’s future.

Silva Emerges as a Leading Candidate

James Olley of ESPN believes Fulham manager Marco Silva could be a prime contender if Levy decides to make a change. Speaking on The Football Reporters, Olley stated:

“I think Marco Silva is another interesting option. I think that he would leave Fulham. I think he was quite keen to go to Chelsea, had they made a concerted effort to appoint him in the past. So I think he’s ambitious Silva.”

Olley also noted Silva’s aspirations to manage at a higher level: “I think, obviously Fulham, I’m sure, would fight tooth and nail to keep him, but I can see a scenario where Marco Silva certainly courts some interest if there’s a possibility of that.”

Silva’s Fulham Transformation Stands Out

Since joining Fulham in 2021, Silva has revived the club’s fortunes. He guided them to the Championship title in the 2021/22 season, scoring an astonishing 106 goals. In their first season back in the Premier League, Fulham secured a 10th-place finish, and Silva turned down lucrative offers from the Saudi Pro League to remain at Craven Cottage.

Silva also led Fulham to their first-ever League Cup semi-final, narrowly losing to Liverpool. While last season ended with a modest 13th-place finish, Fulham currently sit eighth, just five points adrift of the top four.

Concerns Over Silva’s Everton Record

Despite his success at Fulham, Silva’s previous stint at Everton raises concerns. Appointed in 2018, he managed only 24 wins from 60 games, a win rate of just 40%. His tenure ended abruptly in December 2019, following a 5-2 defeat to Liverpool that left the Toffees in the relegation zone.

Given Tottenham’s current struggles, Levy will need to weigh Silva’s impressive Fulham rebuild against his underwhelming time at Goodison Park.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

The potential appointment of Marco Silva evokes mixed emotions. On one hand, his transformation of Fulham into an attacking, fearless side is impressive. The Championship title, a top-half Premier League finish, and a League Cup semi-final highlight his managerial credentials.

However, there is the lingering shadow of his Everton tenure, where a promising start unravelled into a chaotic end. Spurs fans will rightly question whether Silva can handle the pressure of a bigger club with higher expectations, especially in the midst of a relegation-threatened campaign.

The connection with Richarlison from their Everton days could be a positive factor, potentially helping the Brazilian rediscover his form. Moreover, Silva’s tactical style – a blend of pressing and counter-attacking football – aligns well with the talents of Maddison, Son, and Kulusevski.

Ultimately, if Daniel Levy decides to make a change, Silva offers an intriguing balance of experience and ambition. But Tottenham fans will want assurances that lessons have been learned from his Everton struggles.
