Gary Neville believes Enzo Maresca must “educate” Chelsea fans after groans were heard from the crowd during the game against Manchester City.

Chelsea started their campaign with a 2-0 defeat against City at Stamford Bridge, but it wasn’t all doom and gloom as there were some positives to take.

It’s going to take time for things to click under the Italian and it’s hard to draw any meaningful conclusions from one game against the defending champions.

Neville’s message for Chelsea fans

Maresca’s style will take time to implement and there were occasions where the Blues built up play nicely from the back.

However, despite it being Maresca’s first game in charge and the first game of the season there were still grumbles from some sections of the Stamford Bridge crowd over the build up play from the back.

Neville, who was covering the game for Sky Sports noticed this and believes Maresca needs to educate Chelsea supporters.

Maresca needs the Chelsea fans on his side throughout the season.

“I think after today Maresca will go to the real fluid football. In that first half, there were, I wouldn’t say boos from Chelsea fans, but sighs, and that needs to probably go,” he told the Gary Neville podcast.

“He needs to educate the fans and so do the club because he is going to play that way, that’s why they’ve signed Maresca as a coach.

“They want to really play out and get these young players popping the ball around and buzzing.”

The atmosphere at Stamford Bridge needs to improve and has long been spoken about, with Moises Caicedo coming out at one point last season saying he preferred playing away from the ground.
