As per Fabrizio Romano, Giovanni Reyna is set to join Nottingham Forest on a six-month loan deal from Borussia Dortmund.

The Midlands side will cover the 21-year-old’s full salary, with manager Nuno Espírito Santo in particular having been pushing to sign the player. Additionally, according to Florian Plettenburg of Sky Germany, the deal will also see Forest attain an option to buy for around €15-20m.

Since making his debut for Dortmund as a 17-year-old in January 2020, the USMNT international has made 90 Bundesliga appearances for the Black and Yellows, but has ultimately struggled to make a significant impact in the side. Amidst multiple injuries and questions over his attitude, Reyna has made just 11 league starts since the beginning of the 2021-22 campaign, scoring nine and assisting three in that time.

Furthermore, the attacking midfielder has also faced issues in his national team following a so-called ‘feud’ between himself, his family, and USMNT manager Gregg Berhalter – which almost resulted in Reyna being sent home from the 2022 World Cup due to his disappointment with his game time (29 minutes) at the tournament.

As such, the precocious talent will be hoping the move to The City ground will see him re-find the form that saw him accumulate nine goal involvements in the 2020-21 Bundesliga season – as he looks to secure a place in Berhalter’s squad for the 2024 Copa America this summer.

As for Forest, upon the completion of his medical, Reyna is set to be their first deal of what could be many this deadline day. Midfielder Orel Mangala is being linked with a €30m move to Lyon, whilst The Reds are said to be actively looking for a new goalkeeper.

Espírito Santo’s side currently sit 16th in the league table just two points of the relegation zone, but could face a possible points deduction later in the season, with the Premier League charging both them and Everton for allegedly breaching the league’s profit and sustainability regulations.
