Diego Simeone is never a manager to back away from confrontation, even if it’s with his own players. If the Argentinian coach thinks you aren’t playing well enough he will let you know, and he’ll probably let everyone else know too.
This has been the case with midfielder Rodrigo de Paul (30), who has become the most recent victim of Simeone’s criticism.
As per ElDesmarque, who quote ESPN, Simeone feels that Rodrigo de Paul shows more effort for his national side than he does playing for his club.
‘Rodrigo De Paul gives a lot to the Argentine national team, more than he has given to Atlético de Madrid, that is clear. He has had important moments and games, but not yet the regularity he has with the national team.‘ Simeone shared in an interview.
Simeone clarified his words by stating that he is an ‘extraordinary guy‘ and ‘a pleasure to work with‘ but also made clear that now he is a World Cup winner he must be held to a higher standard.
The 30-year-old has made eight appearances for Atlético Madrid so far this season, with just one assist to show for his efforts, and few of his matches have seen him play the full 90 minutes.
It will be interesting to see if these words from Simeone incite a reaction from the Argentinian, or if he takes his coach’s criticisms personally.
