Birmingham City have had a poor season this year and currently find themselves 20th in the league, only two places above the relegation zone.
Luckily for them, they are safe from going down but they have not been up to scratch this season and could face the same fate, if not worse next season if they don’t strengthen themselves over summer.
Despite a disappointing season though, there have been some bright sparks for the Blues in Matija Sarkic who has been in on loan from Wolves, Onel Hernandez who joined the club in January on loan and Tahith Chong who’s also a loan player from Manchester United.
We asked FLW’s Birmingham City fan pundit Tom Oxland who he thinks has been the Blues’ signing of the season.
He said:”The signing of the season for Blues, some might say if you’re going to pick Sarkic as your player of the season you might as well pick him for your signing of the season.
“For me, that’s not the case. I think Onel Hernandez has been our signing of the season closely followed by Tahith Chong but I’m just going to edge Onel Hernandez due to how consistent he’s been since we signed him in January and if I’m being perfectly honest I think we’d be a lot worse off in the table if we didn’t sign Onel Hernandez, and sometimes I just watch him play and I wonder how are you playing for Birmingham City?
“He’s got so much quality to offer on and off the ball and plays in a variety of positions including wing-back, as a number ten or a striker but he’s naturally a winger so Onel Hernandz has to take signing of the season for me.”

The Verdict:
Despite the Blues having a poor season, there were a few fair options on signing of the season for the club but Hernandez is a good choice.
Since joining the club the winger has scored three goals and contributed three assists in 36 appearances. Furthermore, as Tom points out, Hernandez is a versatile player and therefore gives Bowyer more options in his team.
Out of the signings considered, Hernandez could be the one they would most likely be able to get on a permanent basis since he joined on loan from soon-to-be fellow Championship side Norwich City.
It has been a poor season for Birmingham but Hernandez has definitely lifted the spirits of the fans since he joined the club.
