A 6-0 aggregate defeat over Bristol City placed Chris Wilder’s side in the promotion showcase, which will take place at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, May 26 against Coventry City.

Not only is a spot in the Premier League on the line, but so is the financial reward that comes with promotion.

The Blades have only spent one year outside the top flight, having been relegated last year with a 20th-placed finish.

Here, we look at how much Sheffield United will earn if they win the upcoming play-off final on 24 May.

Sheffield United's financial reward if they win the Championship play-offs

According to the BBC, the financial reward for winning the play-off final will be worth £220 million to Sheffield United.

This is an increase on the figure the 2024 victors earned, which amounted to a reported £140 million.

It is the largest valuation on victory in the history of the fixture, beating the previous record of £178 million set in 2021.

Last year’s play-off was won by Southampton, beating Leeds United 1-0 thanks to an Adam Armstrong goal to earn the Saints a place back in the Premier League at the first attempt.

However, the Saints have since had their relegation back to the Championship confirmed, and they are now set to be rewarded with parachute payments to tide them over.

Wilder will be hoping his side can avoid the same fate should they be promoted, but first they must beat Sunderland in a showpiece match in England's capital.

Sheffield United have lost in the play-offs in their last nine attempts, including in four finals, with the most recent disappointment coming in 2022, when the play-off final victory was worth £170 million.

A penalty shootout defeat to Nottingham Forest ended the club’s hopes of promotion, but a top two finish was earned 12 months later.

Play-off winners’ history in the Premier League

The winner of the play-offs have gone on to suffer relegation in both of the last two Premier League seasons.

Luton Town won on penalties against Coventry in 2023, a match where victory was valued at £170 million, but Rob Edwards’ side finished 18th in their return to the top flight.

However, three of the previous four play-off winners managed to establish themselves at that level long-term, including Forest after their triumph over Sheffield United.

Brentford were promoted in 2021 at the expense of Swansea City in a final worth £178 million, and have remained in the division in the seasons since.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa were victorious over Derby County in 2019 in a final where the winner took home £170 million, and have even reached the Champions League in the years since confirming their return to the Premier League.

Sheffield United’s record against play-off final opponents

Wilder would have perhaps been hoping for Sheffield United to face Coventry given their record against them this season, defeating them 3-1 at Bramall Lane back in March.

The Yorkshire outfit also earned a 2-2 draw at the CBS Arena in November, despite going down to 10-men before half-time.

But their record against Sunderland this season is more mixed, with the home side winning on each occasion they met in the league.

Their most recent meeting was the 2-1 win for the Black Cats at the Stadium of Light back in January, which might give Régis Le Bris’ side the confidence they need to overcome Sheffield United at Wembley.
