Roma centre-back Mats Hummels has responded to false-rumours that he and coach Claudio Ranieri have fallen out, insisting that the Giallorossi boss is someone who he ‘respects and values so much’.

The 2014 World Cup winner caused a bit of a stir with a caption on his latest Instagram post, which read: “The Oscar for the longest vacation goes to …”, along with a few photos of himself sightseeing in the capital.

As Hummels was left out of the Roma starting line-up for the 2-1 victory over Como at the weekend, some took his Instagram caption to be a slight dig at Ranieri for leaving him out.

Hummels responds to Ranieri fall-out rumours

Hummels has previously been accused of writing cryptic messages in his Instagram posts, such as when he wrote “Match pictures to be included soon, I hope,” while waiting for his Giallorossi debut while Ivan Juric was still in charge.

Both Hummels and Ranieri insist that this is not the case. The defender has since provided clarification via a post on his Instagram story, which reads: “Every time I post a private picture from Rome, people write ‘Vacanze en Rome’ and that’s what the joke is about under my last post.

“Crazy that someone says it’s criticism to Mister Ranieri, who I respect and value so much. Wow.”

Ranieri was also asked if there he had any issues with Hummels during his pre-match press conference on Wednesday afternoon, which drew a frustrated response from the 73-year-old.

“Why do you always have to go looking for things?,” Ranieri asked in response.

“I understand that you want to rub salt in the wound when Roma does badly, but there is nothing. There are no worries, there’s nothing. We get along fine, with everyone.”
