“I don’t know” – 3 reasons Chelsea keep dropping points from winning positions to help clueless Maresca

Enzo Maresca’s press conference today was surprisingly positive given the dreadful results. He was given a few difficult questions though, like on the subject of Cole Palmer’s individual form.
Another tough question for the gaffer was on his team and why they have dropped so many points from winning positions – it’s 13 since Boxing Day, which is more than some teams drop in a whole season.
Against Aston Villa on Saturday we saw the most textbook edition yet – start well, control the game, score, get scared, retreat, concede, lose.
It’s fair to say Maresca is clueless on this topic, by his own admission:
“I don’t know [why we keep dropping points], to be honest. I don’t have an answer for that. I knew this, that we dropped 13 points from winning positions,” the manager said.
“Sometimes it is football, sometimes there is a reason why behind, we are trying to understand a little bit. The good thing is at least you were in front in these kinds of games. Now, it is the other part; when you are in front, try and protect that.”

Well we can help you out a little Enzo. For one thing, the team seem to struggle in terms of fitness later in games, that’s one obvious reason. There’s also a mentality element, with a lack of experience and leaders meaning panic spreads quicky.
Of course there’s simple player quality too – better players would have put away more chances to seal games, or defended better to keep the lead.
Then there’s the subs and tweaks (or lack thereof) that the manager makes, which means even in games where his team are in control, as on Saturday, we’re vulnerable to the opposition changing things up.
That should be enough to be going on with, Enzo…
