‘I should be smarter’ – Lyon’s Corentin Tolisso regrets red card against Manchester United

Corentin Tolisso’s red card in the final moments of normal time didn’t prove to be a big turning point in the game between Olympique Lyonnais and Manchester United. The Lyon midfielder was shown a second yellow after a tangle of legs with Leny Yoro, leaving his side with a numerical disadvantage.

“Unfortunately, I got this second yellow card that hurt us. With the experience that I have, I should be smarter, and not been in [the line of] his run,” said Tolisso in the mixed zone post-match. Despite going down to 10 men, Lyon went into a 4-2 lead in extra time thanks to goals from Rayan Cherki and Alexandre Lacazette.

However, Manchester United hit back, netting three goals in seven minutes to knock Lyon out of the UEFA Europa League. “The guys were great,” said Tolisso, despite OL’s elimination (5-4, agg. 7-6). “From where I am, I am very proud. At 4-2, we maybe told ourselves it was over […] for sure, it is one of my worst matches with this red card and this elimination. I think we deserved better,” added Les Gones’ vice-captain.

“We will have to get our heads back up because we have a match to win on Sunday,” said Tolisso. OL face local rivals AS Saint-Étienne and remain in the race to secure UEFA Champions League football for next season.
