Portsmouth striker John Marquis looks set to be on his way out of Fratton Park this month – and a surprise contender for his signature has emerged.

The 29-year-old’s contract expires at Pompey at the end of the season and with Marquis being one of the club’s top earners, the hierarchy have circled his availability to other EFL outfits this month.

His position in Danny Cowley’s line-up has been taken by Leicester loanee George Hirst and it looks very likely that Marquis’ two-and-a-half year stint at the club could be over.

Marquis may have to take a step down in the EFL pyramid though but there are ambitious teams in League Two – one of them being Mansfield Town who are interested in bringing the striker back up north.

The Stags currently sit in ninth position in the fourth tier and have won their last four matches and are clearly looking at another forward option to push them into the promotion picture.

Marquis may have to take a wage cut in order to leave Portsmouth but he’s likely to get a longer contract to offset that – Pompey fans have been reacting to this latest transfer link on social media and here’s what they’ve been saying.
