England may have suffered heartache after losing the Euro 2024 final to Spain on Sunday night, but Cole Palmer created history in Berlin.

Gareth Southgate’s side lost 2-1 to Spain meaning their wait for a first trophy since 1966 will go on for another two years at least.

The game seemed to be drifting away from England after Nico Williams had opened the scoring, but Southgate turned to Palmer with 20 minutes remaining to try and rescue the Three Lions.

Three minutes later the 22-year-old equalised with a brilliant left footed strike, but England couldn’t capitalise on the momentum and Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winner with four minutes remaining.

Palmer can be proud of his efforts in Germany, and having been overlooked completely for the first two group games he made a real impact in the knockout rounds, scoring in the penalty shootout against Switzerland, setting up Ollie Watkins for the winner against The Netherlands and scoring the equaliser in the final.

The equaliser saw Palmer become the youngest ever substitute to score in a men’s European Championship final, and he finished the tournament with one goal and one assist from no starts, and you can’t help but feel Southgate under used him.
